Project PortfolioProject: Poplar Island Talbot County, Maryland Date: 1994, 1999 through 2001 Client: Talbot County Fee: 240,000 USD Description: Environmental Concern Inc. was contracted to assist in the creation of a tidal marsh wetland system for 750 acres of the 1500 acre Poplar Island, Talbot County, Maryland beneficial use of dredge material project. Scope of services include: developing the habitat development report, analyzing and designing tidal circulation channels, identifying reference marshes for use in obtaining relevant biological benchmarks, reviewing and recommending methods for plant source materials, creating test plot layouts for determination of nurse crop seed mixes and formulating design strategies for the creation of tidal channel hydraulic geometries. This project demonstrates the beneficial use of dredge spoil material and will be used as a reference in future island creation in the Chesapeake Bay. Project: Marsh Resources Meadowlands Mitigation Bank Date: 1998 & 1999 Client: Marsh Resources Inc. Fee: 210,000 USD Description: Environmental Concern Inc. was contracted to prepare feasibility analysis, conceptual plans and bid review for the construction of a 206.3 acre wetland mitigation bank in the Hackensack Meadowlands in New Jersey. This wetland enhancement project involves the removal of Phragmites australis through herbicide application, then increasing tidal flushing through selective locations of channels. Wildlife functions will be increased through the use of upland islands. EC proposed the use of incorporating a high marsh zone with Spartina patens to reduce the amount of earthwork generated and reduce the risk of meadow disturbance. EC has also been involved in the negotiation of the mitigation banking agreement with the interagency team as the owner's representative and is currently serving as the owner's technical advisor during construction. Project: Shady Valley Poor Fen Restoration Date: 1996 Client: The Nature Conservancy, Nashville, Tennessee Fee: 6,000 USD Description: Environmental Concern Inc. was contracted to field review a proposed restoration site that adjoins an existing 2.6 acre fen that supports a population of forty-seven (47) bog turtles. After the site review Environmental Concern collaborated with The Nature Conservancy to arrive at a restoration strategy to promote the growth of sedge/sphagnum tussocks. Due to the remote location, on-site materials and labor were considered for project implementation. After construction the project was deemed a success by The Nature Conservancy and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Project: The Christopher Columbus Center, Baltimore Maryland (Project before I began working for Environmental Concern) Date: 1993 Client: Hargreaves Associates, Inc. Fee: 28,000 USD Description: EC has prepared the design of a constructed wetland to be located on pier 5 of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The wetland is part of the landscape design of the Christopher Columbus Center, which is a center for marine science. The purpose of the project is to provide a wetland in an inner city setting for use as an education center. Project: Shore Erosion at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Brooklyn, NY Date: 1982 & 1999 through 2001 Client: US Department of Interior, National Park Service Description: In 1982, Environmental Concern was contracted by the National Park Service to develop recommendations for shore erosion control through marsh and dune establishment in order to preserve Least Tern nesting habitats at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. In 1999, Environmental Concern is involved with the team in the initial biological inventory work to characterize twelve restoration sites throughout Gateway National Recreation Area. Through a cooperative agreement, the work will involve reviewing floral and faunal studies performed by several universities in the New York City area to arrive at ecologically viable, economical wetland restoration strategies.
